The Closest Thing to Crazy - New Favorite Song

Well, new to me, anyway.

At work, I listen to Acoustic Cafe at www.boomerradio.com all day. They mostly play 70's singer-songwriter ballady stuff, but mix in some older and some newer stuff.

Recently, they've picked up a song I really like. It's called The Closest Thing to Crazy and is by a 19 year old living in Britain, but born in Georgia (former SSR) named Katie Melua.

She's a classic torch singer in style.

Anyone else heard of her or this song?

- Sue

And now I know
That there's a link between the two,
Being close to craziness, and being close to you

Are movie theaters a dinosaur? Do we need them/want them still?

Gravity - Alison Krauss

I left home when I was seventeen
I just grew tired of falling down
And I'm sure I was told
The allure of the road
Would be all I found

And all the answers that I started with
Turned out questions in the end
So years roll on by
And just like the sky
The road never ends

(Chorus:)
And the people who love me still ask me
When are you coming back to town
And I answer quite frankly
When they stop building roads
And all God needs is gravity to hold me down

(Chorus:)
And the people who love me still ask me
When are you coming back to town
And I answer quite frankly
When they stop building roads
And there ain't no more highways to be found
And I answer quite frankly
When they stop building roads
And all God needs is gravity to hold me down

Beautiful voice, beautiful dobro from Jerry Douglas, classic folk/bluegrass sentiment.
Terrific song. I first heard this at a concert here in Amarillo a few weeks ago, and now have the CD and can listen to it to my heart's content!

Album Review: Honkytonk University

I've been sayin' for a long time, I miss the old Toby Keith - the guy who was a little bit vulnerable, and sometimes lost the girl. The kick-ass all-bravado facade was getting old...

Well, it seems like what he learned at his grandma's was every hard-luck tale of failed romance, so this album has quite a few broken heart songs. You'd never know it from the 1st two singles released from it though. Somethings never change - New Orleans was IMO one of the best songs he ever did, but never released.

As Good As I Once Was Second single. Guess he had to include one kick-ass song for those who don't know he can do anything else. Not my favorite, for sure...

Big Blue Note Heartbreak Song #1. A lot of self-depracation humor in here. A little remiscent style-wise of Getcha Some. Can't help but smile at this one.

Honkytonk U Title Song, First Single. Very autobiographical. This sure didn't convince me to buy the CD, but it's OK.

I Got It Bad Heartbreak Song #2. Slowed down ballad. OK, maybe a little too slowed down. Smooth. The dude really can sing.

Just the Guy to Do It Fun flirty song. Classic honkytonk.

Knock Yourself Out Heartbreak Song #3.
I gave you my best shot, but you didnt fall
Head over heels in love after all
I dont wanna hear no more,
Baby, theres the door
Theres nothin left to fight about
Knock yourself out.

Probably my favorite song on the album. Sounding a bit like "We Were in Love" didn't hurt.

She Ain't Hooked on Me No More - duet with Merle Haggard
I didn't like this much the first time I heard it - seemed too simplistic, but on further listening, it's grown on me. The tune really wraps around the lyrics nicely on this one, and Haggard's voice is perfect for it.
Oh, yeah, for those still counting - Heartbreak Song #4.

She Left Me Heartbreak Song #5. Great line:
I heard she ran away with my best friend, Jake,
An' I know I'm gonna miss him when it's all said and done.

Another one to get you smiling.

Where You Gonna Go? Heartbreak Song #6 (but it's the girl missing the guy on this one). Great little 3rd person story song. Love the laid back arrangement on this one. Another of my favorites.

You Ain't Leavin' (Thank God Are Ya) Heartbreak Song #7. Except that he really doesn't seem all that broken up about it.

You Caught Me at a Bad Time Heartbreak Song #8. Another slowed down ballad. Definitely lost the kick-ass attitude on this one.

Your Smile Another classic honkytonk pickup song - a lot softer than "Just the Guy to Do It". Very listenable.

Overall, I like this album quite a bit better than the last few. If you've missed the old Toby Keith, he seems to back on the job with this one...

In Memorium

Arlington
- sung by Trace Adkins

Never thought that this is where I’d settle down
I thought I’d die an old man back in my hometown
They gave me this plot of land
Me and some other men
For a job well done
There’s a big white house, sits on a hill, just up the road
The man inside, he cried the day they brought me home
They folded up a flag
And told my mom and dad
‘We’re proud of your son’

And I’m proud to be on this peaceful piece of property
I’m on sacred ground, and I’m in the best of company
I’m thankful for those thankful for the things I’ve done
I can rest in peace, I’m one of the chosen ones
I made it to Arlington

I remember Daddy brought me here when I was eight
We searched all day to find out where my granddad lay
When we finally found that cross
He said ‘Son, this is what it costs
To keep us free’
Now here I am, a thousand stones away from him
He recognized me on the first day I came in
And it gave me a chill
When he clicked his heels
And saluted me

And I’m proud to be on this peaceful piece of property
I’m on sacred ground, and I’m in the best of company
I’m thankful for those thankful for the things I’ve done
I can rest in peace, I’m one of the chosen ones
I made it to Arlington

And every time I hear twenty-one guns
I know they brought another hero home to us

We’re thankful for those thankful for the things we’ve done
We can rest in peace, ‘cause we are the chosen ones
We made it to Arlington

Yeah, dust to dust
Don’t cry for us
We made it to Arlington

Recognition came slowly...

...but listening to this song the other night struck a chord, and reminded me of something.

In my home town
For anyone who sticks around
You're either lost or you're found
There's not much in between
In my home town
Everything's still black and white
It's a long, long way from wrong to right
From Sunday morning to Saturday night

Everybody just wants to get high
Sit and watch a perfect world go by
We're all looking for love and meaning in our lives
We follow the roads that lead us
To drugs or Jesus

My whole life
I've tried to run, I've tried to hide
From the stained glass windows in my mind
Refusing to let God's light shine
Down on me
Down on me

Everybody just wants to get high
Sit and watch a perfect world go by
We're all looking for love and meaning in our lives
There's not much space between us
Drugs or Jesus

Everybody wants acceptance
We all just want some proof
Everyone's just looking for the truth

Everybody just wants to get high
Sit and watch a perfect world go by
We're all looking for love and meaning in our lives
We follow the roads that lead us
To drugs or Jesus

I actually got a chill when I realized I was hearing the flip side of Karl Marx's "Religion is the opiate of the masses."
